In the space of two years, artificial intelligence transformed graduate research. What was lost is the thinking that the processwas supposed to produce. The hours students once spent hand-coding transcripts were never just about coding; they were how students internalized the data and learned to defend their interpretive choices. The weeks spent reading and synthesizing literature were never just about producing a literature review; they were how students came to understand the theoretical landscape of their field.
When AI compresses those processes from weeks to minutes, the output looks the same: well-organized themes, clean thematic syntheses, statistical results with proper interpretation, but the student may never have done the thinking thatthe output implies.

JohnDewey (1933) saw reflection as the core mechanism of thinking and learning. He defined it as “active, persistent, carefulconsideration” of beliefs and evidence, and he essentially equated reflection with critical thinking. His bigger claim is often missed: experience alone does not produce learning; reflection onexperience does. A student can interactwith AI-generated output all day without learning anything, because the activity itself is not educative. What makes it educative is the reflective processof examining what the output means, whether it is defensible, and how it connects to the student’s own intellectual commitments. Reflection is thebridge between doing and knowing.
JackMezirow (1991) extended Dewey’s work into a theory of transformative learning. For Mezirow, critical reflection validates what is known. Learners critically assess the content, process, and premises of their efforts to interpret and give meaning to experience; when reflection focuses on premises, it produces perspective transformation, a fundamental shift in how the learner understands their world. The implication is clear: structured, prompted critical reflection is not supplementary to learning but constitutive of it. Students who are asked to defend, question, and revise their reasoning are not just documenting a process, they are doing the learning.
Modern research confirms both Dewey and Mezirow and adds an important qualification. Unguided reflection produces weak results; structured, repeated reflection produces strong results. Activities alone do not build thinking. Content delivery alone does not build thinking. Even discussion alone does not guarantee thinking.
